Brown-Tougaloo Partnership

Undergraduate Programs

Undergraduate students can conduct summer research, apply early admission to medical school and pursue a master’s in public health, among other opportunities, through Brown-Tougaloo Partnership programs.

Founded in 2007, the Bernstein Scholars Program funds research projects led by students involved in the Brown-Tougaloo Student Semester Exchange Program that will have an impact on student learning while improving and fostering the partnership between Brown and Tougaloo. Students may convene focus groups; conduct field research in the areas of history, public health, culture or policy; or organize other community-based research projects.

Through a partnership between the Brown University Department of Africana Studies course AFRI 1090: Civil Rights Movement and the Swearer Center, Brown University students are invited to participate in a curated trip merging curricular and co-curricular learning opportunities. During a week-long spring break trip to Jackson, Mississippi, and Tougaloo College, students learn about the U.S. Civil Rights Movement through course seminars, tours, engaging with community-based organizations and visiting Tougaloo College. This trip seeks to inform students about civic engagement and social justice.

The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University hosts an Early Identification Program (EIP) in Medicine that offers Tougaloo pre-med students a route to apply for early admission.   The program provides fee waivers, MCAT waivers, application support and targeted recruiting on Tougaloo’s campus. Launched in 1976, the EIP continues to be a special highlight of the partnership, as one of the longest-standing active programs between the institutions.

The Health Equity Scholars program is a scholarship and leadership development opportunity for select students entering the Master of Public Health Program at Brown University. The Health Equity Scholars program offers full tuition support, a partially paid research assistantship, and structured mentoring and coaching.

Founded in 1964, the Brown-Tougaloo Partnership (BTP) Student Semester Exchange Program offers undergraduates the opportunity to study at the partner institution for one semester. Since the program’s inception, more than 300 students have participated in this exchange.

During the summer, students have the opportunity to conduct research in various departments and disciplines at Brown University or Tougaloo College through The Leadership Alliance’s James H. Wyche First Year Research Experience (FYRE) and Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP). Brown University students may participate in research with The Jackson Heart Study program and/or conduct independent research in other disciplinary areas at Tougaloo College.
