Brown-Tougaloo Partnership

Brown-Tougaloo Partnership Program

The pioneering Brown-Tougaloo Partnership is a collaboration between Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi, that provides opportunities for students and faculty to engage with the academics, culture and histories of these two distinctive institutions.

Formalized in 1964 during the U.S. Civil Rights era, the Brown-Tougaloo Partnership (BTP) aims to enrich both campuses through academic and cultural exchanges, collaborative research ventures and administrative-level partnerships. In the over 60 years since its creation as one of the first partnerships of its kind between one of the nation’s historically Black colleges and universities and a leading research institution, more than 760 students and faculty members have participated in BTP programs and projects.

Brown-Tougaloo Partnership (BTP) programs provide a variety of opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members at both Brown University and Tougaloo College, as well as high school students.
The Brown-Tougaloo Partnership (BTP) serves as an enduring national model for academic and cultural exchange. The partnership is overseen by an advisory council with members from the Brown University and Tougaloo College communities, and supported by staff and faculty at both institutions.
Established during the Civil Rights Movement, the Brown-Tougaloo Partnership has evolved and expanded its impact over the years.
